May-Bee

These Bento(ish) Box blocks took me longer than I thought they would!

Weird ...

It's just strips sewn around a square ... what could be hard about that right?

Dunno, but I found it a bit challenging keeping them square.  Perhaps I just wasn't giving the block the respect it deserved.

Our May Ausbee Queen gave us this tutorial to work off, but only wanted three rings around the original square.

Inner square is 4"
1st ring is 2"
2nd ring is 1.5"
3rd ring is 2.5"

The colour choice was Blue, Red and Purple.  The only rule being that the 1st ring around the square was to be white.  I didn't have any of these colours, especially purple...

So I popped into a brick and mortar quilt shop called Quintessential Quilts (no affiliation) for some much needed help in fabric selection.  Thank you ladies, I think we come up trumps!

Right to left: Cotton Supreme colour 121 (Purple solid), Stof Quilters Basic (Red), Dear Stella (Navy)

Once our Queen receives her blocks she's going to quarter them and arrange them as per the tutorial.  I think it's going to look lovely and I look forward to seeing her finished quilt.

Now I'm off to pop these in the post!

  1. I used to live near Quintesstial Quilts! I'd pop in some times if caught the bus home and had to walk from Galleria.

I screwed up the cutting for some of my block strips; I didn't cut them long enough even thought I KNEW how long they should be lol oops. I guess a cheat to help keep them square is to make the strips wider then you can trim them down (hindsght..). You picked some really pretty prints!!

    1. Great idea about making the strips wide and then trimming! I need to do that more often. Lovely block, Serena. The tutorial looks like a fun one to make with bee blocks--as long as your sewists are precise! That's a lot of matching to do :) I can't wait to see the finished quilt!

  2. I really like the fabrics you've used, they look very stylish. Isn't it funny how hard it can be to sew a straight line sometimes. Your blocks look great and I know the May Queen will love them!

  4. I have always struggled with those blocks, too, so I tend to sew a scant 1/4" and trim after each step. It makes it a pretty time consuming piecing process, but I ended up being happier with the results.

  6. Beautiful blocks Serena!! I especially love the fabrics you chose. That is a very unexpected color combo and not one that I would have thought of, but it looks great and quite regal.
