September Bee Blocks - Improv

Our Threadbias Ausbees Queen Bee has very innocently asked for Improv blocks.

She would like brights (of one colour, can use several tones) on a low volume background.

12.5" blocks.

Simple right?  No rules is awesome right? ... ah, WRONG!!

So this is me ...

Drowning ...

... doing Improv ...

Fiddlesticks!

... let's all agree not to let that happen again ...

  1. I think your blocks are great! Hopefully next time the blocks will be more in line with your sewing style. :)

  2. :), that's what your post made me do. I think your blocks look great too! I love the idea of improv. . . it does seem like it should take a shorter amount of time. . . but it always takes me longer :)

  3. I think the blocks look fantastic! I'm especially a fan of the curved piecing block. I really want to play around with some improv curves, hopefully I'll have time soon and mine will come out half as cool as your block did!

  4. I love your improv drunkard's path block--a drunk drunkard's path???? I also agree with Judy, above, that improv takes longer. Once I got over that fact, I began to like it. I also find that it is less annoying if I work on several at once instead of only one--less jumping up and down.

  5. "very innocently" LOL.

Yours came out much better than mine! I had complete boring vision and had to copy other people's tutorials -- not very improvisational of me :)

  6. I really like fiddlesticks and I love the fabric you used in drowning - I think they will be well received!

  7. I think they have turned out really well!
I would freak out at the lack of guidelines, and I doubt I could do improv half as well.
(I recognise the background fabric in drowning!)

  10. I always love seeing low-volume blocks. It's on my list of things to try and every time I see one it makes me want to do it even more!

  12. I love that the quilting community can push us to try something we wouldn't have otherwise tried. When I finally joined my quilt guild back in 2002 I was so excited to participate in the block of the month... and then the first month I was a member it was an applique block. Ahh!!! Now I'm still not a big fan of doing applique (though I appreciate it when others do it) I'm glad I challenged myself to try. I love your blocks. They look great.

  13. You are too hard on yourself, Serena. These blocks are cute! Let go and keep going. You will discover something that will click with you and that you will be happy with!

  14. You can't drown with improv, you silly billy! These are great blocks. The curvy one is a beautiful composition and the block with red is wonderful for its off center design and popping contrast.

  15. I think that you are way too hard on yourself, your blocks look great and I am sure that your queen bee will love them. I agree though that the more opened end the request is, the harder it can be.

  17. I like the red one! I adore that text fabric. I'm not so sure about the circles though... But you have to experiment to learn, right?!
